Peterborough Area
The geographic location of the signal boxes can be seen on a current OS Map. The map will place Peterborough at the centre of the map panel and other locations can then be selected by use of the Gazetteer or simply scrolling around. Roll the mouse over the icon(s) to reveal what they represent. Increase the scale using the scale selector on the left to separate closely positioned icons.
A number of signalling locations in the Peterborough Area were filmed for the FARSAP Project on 19 May 2023.
The videos are intended for viewing at a maximum screen resolution of 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. Please be aware that viewing at a larger size may result in a loss of clarity and a 'grainy' appearance.
Part 1: Peterborough PSB
Peterborough PSB opened on the 3rd of December 1972 and having served for just over 50 years, it was decommissioned and re-controlled to York at 22.05 hrs on 26th August 2023.
Part - 2: Peterborough Crossings Panel
On 3 May 1998, a separate IFS panel supplied by NRS was installed in Peterborough PSB to control by CCTV the level crossings previously worked from Everton, Offord and Holme.
In November 2000, that panel was replaced by the TEW SM48 panel seen here.Part – 3: Eastfield
This listed structure was bult by the Great Northern Railway in 1894 and survives alongside the East Coast Main Line as a Shunting Frame.
Part – 4: Helpston and Woodcroft
Helpston box was opened by the GNR in 1898. It continues as a gate box to control not only its own level crossing but also a whole series of CCTV crossings.
Woodcroft is a remarkable survivor, working manual gates with ley locks for a crossing over both the ECML and the Peterborough to Leicester line.
